Never used Instagram. Could selfhosting Pixelfed be useful for sharing pictures between family members?
While I have not used this feature specifically - immich is great for self hosting photos
I think it has a container crutch. If it can install on a system and update like all my other stuff (automatically) then I’m in. I don’t have time to pop containers 6000km away with minimal tech support when they blow up.
Immich was alright once I had manually set every account to be “Partners” with every other account. I plan to set it up again once I get hardware for the server so I can easily backup images/video from my phone (while at home anyway).
possibly, but that specific use-case has be solved with dedicated image hosting tools that allow sharable links https://photoview.github.io/
this is more decentralized social networks
Pixelfed SMASH
Already nearly $75K:

Why does it say $54K for me?
Says that for me too. Could it be the difference between USD and Canadian Dollars?
Am Canadian, I see 78k so yes
Dunno. It’s $78K now.
54k for me too, weird.
Must be a time travel thing. Some advice for you, visitors from 24 hours ago: learn Dutch. The Netherlands conquered the world in the 18-hour war and English is a dying language. And stock up on whale blubber. You’re gonna need it.
Perfect. That’s the type of changes I can look forward to!
Get him working on it full time lets gooo
I would love to join, but the whole registration process fails at every turn. Mails aren’t sent, login pages just do refresh…please…just let me iiiiinn
That’s a bummer. I picked an instance from…
…and it was very painless and quick. Have you tried joining a different instance? Do you have an adblocker or JS blocker that might be fucking up the registration?
Choose a smaller instance. The biggest one isn’t accepting people right now.
I also had this problem. I tried 3 small (<1k user) instances and never got a signup email from any of them. Almost began to wonder if Gmail was just blackhole filtering all of them.
They might be? Federation isn’t great for all of the big boys.
It’s more a problem of aggressive spam filtering- “big name” email domains will automatically ignore traffic from every email server thats not part of a known proven white-list, ostensibly to stop spammers from spinning up new domains every few minutes to keep sending mails. So any small service, including a self hosted option for email, often gets conveniently blackholed by the monopoly and are not usable.
Same with me. Tried a week ago on a smaller instance and got nothing. Tried with another email this week and still nothing 🤷🏻♂️. I am not in a rush, was mostly wondering if I had been rejected for some reason.
I got onto the biggest one (I think pixelfed.social) but it seems to be down frequently. When it works it’s fine. Figure it’s probably growing pains, I know lemmy was the same after the reddit exodus and it’s been much better lately.
I don’t know if I happened to just get lucky, but I was having issues in firefox mobile and had to temporary instal chrome for the account creation. Not sure if chrome actually fixed the issue or if the server just happened to come back up after I switched.
The server’s getting hammered today for sure. People on the server are posting at a rate of 5 posts per second. It’s wild.
Registrations are open though. The local timeline is filled with first posts from accounts created today.
They’re about to launch a second flagship server to relieve some of the stress on p.s. It sounds like it’ll be in the next day or two (but you never know with them).
Might be a good option if you’re still having trouble when they fire it up.
Yeah, tried to sign up earlier this morning, and account creation and linkage seems to be rather fucky currently
I had an issue but I got signed up like 20 minutes ago.
