It’s worth mentioning that both these programs are subject to leaks in machines infected with malware like OP’s was, so maybe if malware is a problem you deal with regularly, i suggest the online options.

If anything, having to deal with the US has brought us closer together. On one side there’s Trump making a fool of himself and of the US. On the other side there’s Musk, thinking he can take on European unions and actually win, because he thinks he’s still in the US, and in the middle there’s what i like to call the sheep pen of tech companies. The thing about anonymity that a lot of people don’t get is that there is no such thing as 100% anonymous. Vpn makes it more expensive to track you. Tor makes it more expensive to track you. Good opsec makes it more expensive to track you but ultimately, if you’ve got a target on your back, there is no way to be 100% anonymous.

The thing you gotta ask yourself is, what is your threat model ? Are you hiding from LEO on account of torrents or just want some privacy from corporations? VPN is fine. Are you buying drugs on the darkweb ? TOR is fine. Are you selling drugs on the darkweb ? You probably need a more sophisticated masking network mesh. Are you involved in CSAM or run a darkweb market ? Nothing you do will help you, you are going to get caught, that is a certainty.

Don’t go wasting your precious brain matter on developing a leak free network. There is no such thing. If someone wants badly to track you down, with enough money, they will. Best you can do is be a little bit more trouble than it’s worth to spend on you. For some things, like i mentioned before, there is a cutoff point where you’re as anonymous as you’ll ever be. For others, there is basically unlimited resources to track you. Even using TOR, they can get you at your entry node, like it has happened before, if no one else in your neighborhood is connected to TOR.

Mods absolutely made reddit unusable for me. I mainly lurk in the news subreddits and they’re all the same. I got perma banned and instantly muted on some news subreddit i don’t really recall for saying an article’s title was clickbait. I got perma banned on worldnews and news for different instances of criticizing Israel.

I even tried using the platform to do other non politics things, like commenting on those am i wrong type of subreddits and got perma banned for not being supportive. Got banned in about half a dozen, despite never being there, for commenting on other subreddits.

I honestly cannot understand how people use the site without being permabanned nearly everywhere. You don’t even need to be combative. They use permaban for literally any minor infringement or disagreement that turns up and then mute you if you try to discuss it. It’s so frustrating. Thank goodness for Lemmy. There’s a lot of weird propaganda here, but at least you’re not permabanned.

Everywhere little by little is becoming like this. Youtube keyword snipes your comment and never tells you anything about it. It’s hard to find places to discuss the hard subjects now. Everything is for the advertisers.
